The $226.5 million renovation of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium is nearing completion, according to Memphis athletic director Ed Scott. Speaking at a “Tigers on Tour” event in Lakeland on May 12, Scott shared new details about the upgrades.
“We’ve got a new scoreboard coming on the south side, and another on the north side,” Scott said. “The north tunnel is being built, and we’re installing surround sound throughout the entire stadium, so you won’t hear it from the scoreboard anymore.”

While the centerpiece of the renovation is the completely rebuilt west tower featuring various suite levels, Scott emphasized that the improvements extend beyond that area. “Everyone’s talking about the west tower, and we’re proud of it, but we’ve saved money on construction to ensure an upgraded experience no matter where you sit inside that stadium. That’s what I’m really proud of,” he added.
The renovations remain on track for completion before the 2026 season kicks off. Memphis will open the season on the road at UNLV on Aug. 29, followed by the home opener against Arkansas State on Sept. 5. The stadium has been undergoing renovations since 2024, with reduced capacity for the past two seasons.
As part of the funding agreement — with the city contributing $120 million — the university will take ownership of the stadium. Scott has expressed interest in hosting other events there. “If we have this wonderful real estate asset and only use it seven to nine times a year, that doesn’t make a lot of sense,” he said.
