While rookie minicamps offer limited contact and no veteran presence, Washington’s weekend session stood out for one key reason: significant offseason upgrades. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, Washington moved aggressively to recapture the magic of 2024, when they reached the NFC Championship Game. The defense—arguably the league’s worst last season—was completely overhauled. Six free-agent acquisitions are projected as starters on that side of the ball. Then came the draft, where the Commanders hit a home run with seventh overall pick Sonny Styles. The linebacker’s dominant play at Ohio State helped the Buckeyes win a national title in 2024, and his addition brings youth, speed, and a winning mentality to a unit that desperately needed it.
On offense, the focus was on supporting quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders added former Buccaneers running back Rashaad White and rookie wideout Antonio Williams, a third-round pick who is expected to play a significant role immediately. Tight end Chig Okonkwo, signed to a three-year deal in March, provides another reliable target. Washington also re-signed wide receiver Dyami Brown, who developed a strong connection with Daniels in 2024.
The roster building may not be finished. Trade rumors continue to link the Commanders with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who could be moved once the 49ers make a final decision. If that deal materializes, it would provide Daniels with yet another explosive weapon.
